2021-01-15 Italian Banks and NPL Market – English Update

In a poll of institutional investors at Fitch’s Credit Outlook conference on 13 January, 91% of respondents expected more mergers and acquisitions, with 52% citing domestic mergers to strengthen banks’ market positions as the main driver. Nearly 70% of the audience expected NPL sales to pick up, with banks’ capital management the main driver, followed by increased expertise among non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs) in handling NPLs. BNL  an Italian bank part of BNP Paribas group has launched a multi-banking service in partnership with Tink a Swedish open banking platform provider. The collaboration aims to strengthen the collaboration between BNP Paribas and Tink that began in the first half of 2020. Read the article.

The European Commission has presented a strategy to prevent a future build-up of non-performing loans (NPLs) across the European Union, as a result of the coronavirus crisis. The strategy aims to ensure that EU households and businesses continue to have access to the funding they need throughout the crisis. Read Press Release.

Rapid and affordable methods of summarizing the multitude of data relating to the pandemic can be useful to health authorities and policy makers who are dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic at various levels in the territories affected by SARSCoV-2. This is the goal of the Synthetic COVID Index, an index based on an ensemble of Unsupervised Machine Learning techniques which focuses on the identification of a latent variable present in data that contains measurement errors. This estimated latent variable can be interpreted as “the strength of the pandemic”. An application to the Italian case shows how the index is able to provide a concise representation of the situation. Check the Paper.

EthicalFin NPL has announced the launch of a lending crowdfunding program through the Businesslending platform starting on January 25. Article in Italian.

There were approximately 116,637 auctions in 2020 compared to 204,632 in 2019. According to estimates by NPLs RE_Solutions’ AstaSy Analitics Center, there were approximately 123,000 auctions potentially subject to deferral last year for a missed recovery of approximately 8600 billion. Viride Spa and Green Utility have founded the joint venture Green Vir to take advantage of the opportunities available in the “special situation” sector with particular focus on renewable energies. Article in Italian.

Italy is working to extend by 12 months a state guarantee scheme designed to help banks shed problem loans, two sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday, as the industry braced for a surge in pandemic-driven defaults. Authorities are focusing on how best to help banks deal with the fallout from the coronavirus crisis, once governments unwind extraordinary measures they deployed to support businesses.
